In this interactive installation, users are introduced to Nyx, a reclusive Wendigo whose monstrous visage belies a desperate craving for human connection. Tormented by an acute social anxiety, Nyx’s paradoxical response is to monitor humans from the shadows, avoiding direct contact yet yearning for closeness.

This experience is brought to life through a meticulously crafted 3D model of a surveillance room, realized using the advanced capabilities of Maya and Unity. The room is conceptualized as a subterranean space brimming with screens that spring to life with real-time footage upon program initiation. This footage is sourced from the user’s webcam, fostering an immersive sense of being watched by Nyx.

Nyx’s observance, however, is not unwavering. True to the Wendigo’s whimsical nature, an offering of sweets can lure Nyx away from the monitors. This interaction serves as a pivotal mechanic in the installation, revealing the creature’s vulnerability and adding a layer of depth to the user experience. Additionally, the narrative unfolds with the introduction of Nyx’s adversarial relationship with crows. Releasing a crow into this digital realm triggers a defensive reaction in Nyx, momentarily disrupting the surveillance and providing a narrative twist to the installation.

This project not only engages participants with real-time interactivity but also weaves a complex tale of an entity caught between two instincts — the instinctual retreat from society and the instinctual desire for social integration.
